DOT Exam?

What is a

A DOT exam is a medical physical required by the U.S. Department of Transportation for anyone with a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Picture this: you’re a commercial driver hauling goods across state lines or operating heavy machinery, often for hours on end. The road stretches on, and with it comes the responsibility to stay sharp and healthy for every mile. Staying healthy isn’t just personal; it’s essential for the safety of everyone on the road.

The DOT exam verifies that drivers meet specific health and fitness standards, from vision and hearing to heart health, so they’re prepared for the demands of the job and able to handle long hauls or sudden stops with ease.

Why are exams

Necessary?

Safety First: The primary goal of DOT exams is to keep our roads safe. Commercial drivers handle large, heavy vehicles, and their health can significantly impact their ability to drive safely. Making sure drivers are in good health helps reduce accidents, protecting both the drivers and everyone on the road.

Staying Legal: DOT exams aren’t just about safety—they’re also a legal requirement. Federal regulations set specific health standards for commercial drivers. Meeting these standards helps drivers keep their CDLs and stay compliant with the law.

Preventing Emergencies On The Road: Certain health conditions, like heart disease, uncontrolled diabetes, or poor vision, can lead to serious medical events behind the wheel. DOT exams identify and address these risks before they can become hazards on the road.

Supporting Employers and Insurers: Employers benefit from DOT exams because they reduce the risk of accidents tied to undisclosed health issues. Insurers often require these exams, too, as part of their coverage eligibility checks.

Consistency & Fairness: DOT exams follow strict guidelines and standardized procedures, so that all drivers are assessed fairly. This consistency maintains the integrity of the exam process and upholds safety standards across the board.

Should I Bring Any
Medical Records?

If you have any ongoing medical conditions (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea), bring recent medical records and a list of current medications. If you use corrective lenses, hearing aids, or other assistive devices, be sure to bring those with you as well

What Happens
If I Don't Pass?

It depends on the reason for failure. You may be eligible for a second physical, if the reason is addressed and corrected. If it is something irreversible, there many not be any options to pass in the future. It’s best to discuss your options with your provider if you don’t pass.

Can I Go To Any
 Doctor Near Me?

No, only Certified Medical Examiners listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) National Registry can perform DOT physicals. All POHS providers are certified to perform DOT Exams.
